Zambezi Reverie: From the Smoke That Thunders to the Wild Zambezi

8 Days | 2 Royal Retreats | Experience Victoria Falls & Escape to the Wild.

travel brief

Royal Zambezi Lodge and Royal Chundu have partnered to craft a safari experience that captures Zambia’s deep-rooted diversity, from the calm, rich waters of the Zambezi River and the sweeping escarpment that frames the valley to the adrenaline-fueled pulse of Victoria Falls, the country’s adventure capital, Livingstone.

This immersive eight-day journey takes you from the awe-inspiring roar of Mosi-oa-Tunya, “The Smoke That Thunders,” known to the world as Victoria Falls to the striking landscapes and wildlife-rich wilderness of the Lower Zambezi. It combines heart-racing adventure, soul-stirring scenery, and moments of deep connection.

Your journey begins at Royal Chundu, a serene riverside retreat just upstream from Victoria Falls. Here, allow the Upper Zambezi to set the pace – slow, soulful, or exhilarating. Royal Chundu invites you to unwind with river cruises at golden hour, island picnics, and cultural encounters that connect you to the land and its people. But adventure is never far: helicopter flights above the Falls, white-water rafting, bungee jumping, and guided explorations bring the pulse of Livingstone truly to life. As the day winds down, indulge in Royal Chundu’s celebrated dining experiences, where we believe food should be soulful – a celebration of heritage, local ingredients, and shared stories.
From the thundering Falls to the wild heart of the bush, your journey continues to Royal Zambezi Lodge. Set beneath the sweeping escarpment and along the meandering riverbanks, this untamed landscape teams with life. Where your safari is not confined to the back of a vehicle but extends onto the water and across the floodplains, canoe past herds of elephants, walk trails in search of lions and wild dogs, or cast a line into the Lower Zambezi’s legendary waters. The lodge sits at the heart of a thriving wildlife corridor, where every stay contributes to a greater story – one of conservation, community, and deep-rooted connection to the land. And as night falls, dine beneath a canopy of stars, with the sounds of hippos in the distance and fireflies dancing between lantern-lit tables, an experience that lingers long after the last bite. This isn’t just a safari, it’s a celebration of Zambia’s wild spirit and warm soul.

ROYAL CHUNDU | 4 NIGHTS

An authentic Zambian experience that enhances both the traveller and the local community, Royal Chundu is located on the banks of the Zambezi River, which forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Our peaceful retreat celebrates both romance and family, offering tranquillity in a secluded environment, unique adventures, and community empowerment. Further downstream lies the roaring, thundering, and misty Mosi-oa-Tunya (Victoria Falls), only 30km away.
Zambia’s premier Relais & Châteaux establishment, Royal Chundu, comprises two lodges: River Lodge and Island Lodge, both providing picturesque views of the Zambezi. The ten exclusive suites at River Lodge, nestled among the trees, offer seclusion and tranquillity. The four spacious villas at Island Lodge exude charm and exclusivity, situated on the private Katombora island in the middle of the river, shielded by rapids.
The Royal Chundu Experience immerses guests in the local community, which comprises much of our team and benefits from income opportunities created by the lodge. Discover our home through sunrise and sunset cruises, fishing excursions, canoeing trips, riverside picnics, island walks, birdwatching boat trips, sleepouts, and helicopter adventures.

ROYAL ZAMBEZI LODGE | 4 NIGHTS

Framed by the towering Zambezi Escarpment on one side and the river on the other, Royal Zambezi Lodge sits in the heart of one of Africa’s last truly untamed spaces. Animals move seamlessly between dense forests, open floodplains, and the winding waterways of the mighty Zambezi, creating a safari experience that’s as immersive as it is unpredictable.
Tucked along the river’s edge, the lodge is at the centre of a natural wildlife corridor, setting the scene for conscious connections between community, conservation & eco-tourism.
The spacious Deluxe & Presidential Suites offer private decks and plunge pools with sweeping views of the river, where elephants are often seen crossing the water in a breathtaking display.

The diversity of wildlife here is matched only by the ways to explore it; unlike many safari destinations, the Lower Zambezi is not limited to just game drives. Here, the river is as much a part of the adventure as the land. Guests can experience the wild in a way that feels intimate and exhilarating. Venture into the heart of the bush on game drives, where you can witness the park’s famed wild dog packs execute hunts with breathtaking precision, known for taking down prey as large as a buffalo. For a more tranquil perspective, canoe safaris offer an immersive journey along the river; Sunset cruises provide the perfect balance of relaxation and discovery as you drift along the Zambezi with a drink in hand. For those who love exploring on foot, walking safaris allow you to step into the wild with expert guides. For anglers, world-class fishing offers the chance to battle the legendary tiger fish.

Beyond the thrill of wildlife encounters, the Lower Zambezi isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience, raw, breathtaking, and undeniably wild. Whether you seek adventure, tranquillity, or a bit of both, every moment here with Royal is designed to be as extraordinary as the landscape itself.
